Position Yourself for Success
When entering a room to discuss bad news with patients and families, make sure you follow a few simple rules:
- Always sit down and make sure the patient and family are also sitting down.
- Position your chair so that you are close enough to touch your patient.
- Make sure your non-verbal language is consistent with what you have to say. Casual postures create confusion and distrust.
